Jakarta, Indonesia - Law That Bans People From Giving Money To Beggars

Date: 7th November 2007
Location: Jakarta, Indonesia

A week after my trip to Jakarta, I was informed that the authorities in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, have approved a law that bans people from giving money to beggars, buskers and hawkers as part of efforts to clean up the chaotic city of around 10 million people (Reuters, Tue Sep 11, 2007 3:40am EDT). It also outlaws busking, begging and street hawking, which was part of the old bylaw but was rarely enforced in a city where busy traffic intersections are often crowded with guitar-strumming youths, street children and hawkers. The law also bans people from living on river banks and squatting under toll roads. Poor migrants often build make-shift shelters in such areas, sometimes clogging up waterways in the flood-prone city and causing hygiene problems or fire hazards.Under the new rules, offenders can face detention up to 180 days and fines up to 50 million rupiah ($5,312).

What can I say? For all generous tourists, please think twice before you give to beggars. You might end up paying more to the non-beggars like the government.

Jakarta, Indonesia - Soto Gebraaak!!!

Date: 7th November 2007
Location: Soto Gebraaak at Jl Setia Budi near SMAN 3

Soto Gebraaak!! "Senyum Boleh Marah Jangan" means "You can smile but you cant be angry". The extraordinary way of serving the food is by banging the kitchen table with a glass bottle after the meal is prepared. The louder the better. I must warn you first that the banging is pretty deafening.

Another banner "wow belum tau .. jangan marah dong" which means "Wow, you havent tried - so don't be angry".
Fact: Soto, Sroto or Coto is an Indonesian cuisine mainly comprised of broth and vegetables. The meats that most commonly used are beef and chicken, but there are also sotos with mutton and pork. The soup is usually accompanied by rice or compressed rice. Sotos are differentiated by the ingredients in them, such as soto ayam (chicken) and soto kambing (mutton).
There are also specific kinds of regional sotos. There are many varieties of sotos in Indonesia, which vary by regions, class, and ethnicity. Some well known variations are soto Madura (from East Java), soto Betawi (from Jakarta), soto Padang (from West Sumatra), soto Bandung (from West Java), soto Banjar (from South Kalimantan), and coto Makassar (from South Sulawesi). All of these sotos have distinctive flavor.
